Saint Agnes (“Saint Agnes: Innocence and Martyrdom—A Mystical Portrait with the Lamb of God”
Oil on 18x24x1.5 inch canvas
Gold leaf sides.
Inspired by Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God, Saint Agnes's name means "Lamb" as in "Agnus Dei". Her iconography includes a lamb and the pink roses of martyrdom. Here she inhabits a moody mountain pasture imbued with the Light of God.
I am open for commissions of portraits of patron saints in my style. Size will determine the price. If interested, please reach me via the Contact page. I am working on a series now so you can see more examples. These are also for sale.
Agnes was born in 291 into Roman nobility, and raised as a Christian. She suffered martyrdom on 21 January 304, aged 12 or 13. Her high-ranking suitors, slighted by her resolute devotion to religious purity, sought to persecute her for her beliefs. Her father urged her to deny God, but she refused, and she was dragged naked through the streets to a brothel then tried and sentenced to death. After attempts to burn her at the stake failed, she was beheaded.
