This narrative painting was inspired by the myth of the anemome flower. In the Greek myth, Aphrodite's lover, Adonis, is killed by a boar. The grieving Aphrodite's tears mixed with his blood, and red anemone flowers sprang up. I'd intended to use the red flowers plus white and black as the main color palette, but this painting would not let me. It insisted on this ethereal gray and magenta against the golden sky of dawn.

The anemone flowers is associated with lost love. Maybe that is why it made me cry. But the sunrise of hope glows over the garden. I've also been very attracted to 18th century style my entire life, so here I combined an ancient myth with that style. The 18th century adored the classics, so it fits.

At dawn, she gazes at fragile anemone flowers, also know as Daughters of the Wind, as the wind blows the petals off the flowers. This is the first piece I ever created that actually made me cry.
